🎓 Welcome to Level 1: Foundation — Human Factors Awareness
Your journey to understanding human factors in maritime operations starts here.
Human Factors Awareness
The essential starting point for all maritime personnel. Build your understanding of how human factors contribute to incidents — and learn the foundations of a positive safety culture.
Why Human Factors Awareness Matters
Up to 80% of maritime incidents involve human factors. Yet most training programmes focus solely on technical competence. This foundational course closes that gap — equipping every member of your team with the awareness and shared language needed to recognise, discuss, and mitigate human factors risks.
Level 1 creates the shared understanding that is essential for building an effective safety culture across your organisation. It is the required starting point before progressing to Levels 2, 3, and 4.
What You'll Learn
Designed for Everyone in Your Organisation
This course is suitable for all maritime personnel, both ashore and onboard, who require foundational knowledge of human factors. Ideal for new joiners, officers, ratings, and shore-based staff beginning their human factors development journey.
Level 1 is Your Starting Point
Complete Level 1 to build the foundation, then progress through the programme.
Evidence-Informed Training
This course draws on EMSA's European Maritime Safety Report and OCIMF's TMSA framework. Content is designed to address the human factors identified as primary contributors to maritime incidents, with practical application to everyday operations both ashore and onboard.
